How to Calculate Flooring Area for Your Renovation

Planning a flooring renovation starts with one important question: How much flooring do you need?
Accurate calculation helps you avoid material shortages, reduce waste, and control your renovation budget. This guide explains how to calculate the required SPC flooring area quickly and accurately.
1. Measure the Room
Measure the length and width of each area that needs flooring.
For a rectangular room:
Floor Area = Length × Width
If you have multiple rooms, calculate each room separately and add the results together.
For irregular-shaped rooms, divide the space into several simple rectangles, calculate each section, and then add the areas together.
2. Add Installation Waste
You should always purchase some extra flooring to account for cutting, fitting, damaged pieces, corners, doorways, and pattern matching.
Recommended allowance:
Straight installation: 5%–10%
Complex layouts: 10%–15%
Herringbone installation: 10%–15% or more
The basic formula is:
Required Flooring = Total Floor Area × (1 + Waste Percentage)

3. Calculate the Number of Boxes
After calculating the required flooring area, check the coverage of one carton of your selected SPC flooring.
Number of Boxes = Required Flooring Area ÷ Coverage per Box
Always round up to the next whole carton.
Since SPC flooring products can have different plank sizes and packing quantities, check the actual carton coverage before placing your order.

4. Don't Forget These Areas
When measuring your project, remember to include all areas that will receive flooring, such as:
- Living rooms
- Bedrooms
- Hallways
- Dining rooms
- Entryways
- Home offices
- Other finished floor areas
5. Why Buy Extra SPC Flooring?
Keeping some spare flooring is useful for future repairs or replacements. Flooring colors and patterns can sometimes vary slightly between production batches, so keeping several spare planks can help maintain a consistent appearance.
Quick Flooring Calculation Formula
For most standard SPC flooring projects:
Required SPC Flooring = Total Floor Area × 1.05–1.10
For herringbone or more complicated installations:
Required SPC Flooring = Total Floor Area × 1.10–1.15+
Accurate measurements and a suitable waste allowance can help you order the right amount of SPC flooring and avoid unnecessary costs.
